Wellness & Psychological Safety Protocols

Wellness and psychological safety protocols are the policies, practices, and support services an organization puts in place to protect the mental health of people who handle distressing content. They include exposure limits, scheduled breaks, counseling access, and manager training.

‍

‍Why it matters

Psychological safety has a second meaning worth knowing. Researcher Amy Edmondson used it to describe a team climate where people feel able to speak up about problems and mistakes without being punished. For moderators, the two meanings work together. Counseling is only useful if people feel safe enough to admit they're struggling and ask for it. Protocols that exist on paper but carry a stigma in practice don't protect anyone.

‍

‍How to tell whether it's working

Uptake data is the first check. If nobody uses the counseling service, that usually points to stigma or poor access, not a lack of need. Attrition, sick leave, and anonymous survey results add more of the picture, especially when compared across queues with different levels of exposure.

‍

‍What protocols typically include

Common elements are caps on time spent in the most disturbing queues, content rotation, built-in breaks, on-demand or scheduled access to counselors, regular wellness check-ins, the option to step away from a case, and training so managers can spot the warning signs. The best ones are built into the schedule, not left for people to arrange themselves.
