What Is Double-Pass Annotation?
Double-pass annotation is a quality assurance method where two different specialists label the same data point independently, then their outputs are compared for agreement.
Any discrepancies are flagged and sent to a senior reviewer or Subject Matter Expert, who makes the final call and establishes ground truth. This process highlights not just individual errors, but also ambiguities in the labeling guidelines themselves, which can then be corrected for future data.
Double-pass annotation costs more than single-pass labeling, but it produces a measurable Inter-Annotator Agreement (IAA) score, a useful indicator of how reliable the dataset is.
It's typically used on projects where data quality matters more than speed, since it reduces the risk of costly rework or model retraining down the line. It's one of the standard practices BUNCH applies when quality is the priority.
